In most US garages, summer heat builds up because there's nowhere for the hot air to go. Passive vents — the grilles in your roof or gable — only work when the wind is moving. On still 100°F days, they do nothing.

The Zula replaces a garage door window (or a shed gable vent, or an attic vent) with three industrial-grade fans powered directly by a 75W solar panel. The hotter the day, the harder the sun hits the panel, the faster the fans spin. You walk in and your garage is 20–25°F cooler than the air outside.

The story

Built in a garage, for garages.

The Zula started as a backyard problem. The inventor — a Cary, NC engineer with a hot garage — couldn't find a ventilation product that actually moved air on still days without requiring a roof penetration or an extension cord. So he built one in his garage, using hardware-store parts and three industrial cooling fans.

After early prototypes proved themselves with neighbors and a local shed builder, the company moved to formal manufacturing in North Carolina. Today the Zula is listed with the International Door Association, ships from a North Carolina facility, and is integrated into the build configurators of regional shed builders like NC Shed Builders.

The name "Zula" was chosen for its African origin meaning to inspire — a nod to the kind of small, useful design we want every garage and shed to have.

Everything you might ask.

Will the Zula actually keep my garage cooler?

Yes. The Zula keeps garages 20–25°F cooler than outside temperatures by continuously circulating air. It's not an air conditioner — it doesn't refrigerate — but it actively replaces hot, stagnant air with outside air, even when there's no wind. On a 100°F day with the unit running, your garage typically sits at 75–80°F.

How hard is the install really?

If you can use a screwdriver, you can install the Zula. Pop the existing window out (4 to 8 screws depending on your door), drop the Zula in, screw it in place, connect a single on/off switch wire. The unit fits standard 21" × 14.5" cutouts. Most installs take 15 minutes. No electrician, no roof work, no drilling new holes.

What if there's no sun? Does it stop working?

The Zula runs while the sun is hitting the panel — which is exactly when you need ventilation most (hot, sunny days). There are no batteries to maintain. On overcast days, it operates at lower output. At night, when the sun isn't a problem, the unit rests. For continuous operation, an optional hardwire is available — contact us.

Can birds or insects get in?

No. The Zula's fan openings are screened, and the moving fans themselves actively deter birds from approaching or nesting. It's significantly more pest-resistant than a passive gable vent.

How loud is it?

64 dB-A. That's about the volume of a normal office conversation, or a quiet dishwasher. From inside your house, you won't hear it. Standing right next to the unit, it's clearly audible but not unpleasant.

What garage door brands is it compatible with?

Most standard residential garage doors with a 21" × 14.5" window cutout. We've confirmed compatibility with Wayne Dalton 9100 Sonoma, Clopay, and most other major US garage door brands. If your door uses a non-standard window size, contact us before ordering — we can sometimes accommodate.

Does this work for sheds, attics, greenhouses — not just garages?

Yes. The same unit replaces gable vents on sheds and barns, ventilates attics without roof penetration, and works for greenhouses, workshops, chicken coops, and other remote structures. NC Shed Builders and Beachy Barns are two of many partners who include the Zula in their builds. As long as you have a 21" × 14.5" cutout (or can make one), the Zula fits.
